Walking in the Air, from The Snowman
[Several of the Beehive faithful have asked for the lyrics. Always eager to oblige... Song written by Howard Blake.]
We're walking in the air
We're floating in the moonlit sky
The people far below are sleeping as we fly
I'm holding very tight
I'm riding in the midnight blue
I'm finding I can fly so high above with you
On across the world
The villages go by like dreams
The rivers and the hills, the forests and the streams
Children gaze open-mouthed
Taken by surprise
Nobody down below believes their eyes
We're surfing in the air
We're swimming in the frozen sky
We're drifting over icy mountains floating by
Suddenly swooping low
On an ocean deep
Rousing up a mighty monster from his sleep
We're walking in the air
We're dancing in the midnight sky
And everyone who sees us greets us as we fly

What a nice surprise, Fa-So-La-La! I never really conquered the art of playing the piano and singing at the same time -- too much of a one-track mind, I guess. Keep it up! Do better than your mother, by all means!
A note on this song...
This is a special song in our house, and it makes my heart do strange and lovely things to hear Fa-So-La-La playing and singing it... now that she's a big girl and all.
When I was due to give birth to Shieldmaiden in December of 1991, Fa-So-La-La, who was 2 1/2, spent many of those long, wintry, 'waitful' afternoons watching The Snowman on video. It's unlike any other movie I've ever seen -- except for two or three sentences spoken at the very beginning to set the scene, there is no dialogue. It's a lovely animated story of a boy who makes a snowman that comes to life. It's so perfectly British -- the London Symphony plays the luscious score, an English choirboy sings the song Fa-So-La-La has recorded here, and the story itself just has an English sensibility to it.
When I went into labor with Shieldmaiden, I heard this song - the orchestral version - 'playing' in my head the entire night. It was very soothing, and kept me calm and focused.
I will always associate this song with the little blonde fairy princess who sang it to me every few hours that Christmas season when she was two and pure magic... and with the incredible moment the Lord brought Shieldmaiden into our lives, big toothless grin, wild hair and all.
This is really lovely.
Very pretty! I try to play and sing, too, but it's not nearly as beautiful as this.
The Snowman makes me cry...just the beauty and innocency...it gets me every time.
What a special story, Aunt.
Beautiful song! Nice job, I never knew how gifted you were!
Nice story, Queen S. I have one of those songs, too. My son was learning a Bach aria a couple years ago and when I had the new baby, she got so familiar with it that it would calm her. So it became the song he'd play to calm her down when she was fussy. Now, every time I hear it, it brings back those nights when she was a newborn.
You're getting better. :-)
My second day opinion: Don't share any more songs with my sisters. I do believe they're hooked. How do you suppose I could cure them? I know peanut butter works for hiccups and soap for profane speech, so therefore I guess peanut butter soap would be good for.. profane hiccups. Well, that's a step in the right direction. :-\
Thank-you so much for sharing this! We're all enjoying it.
And Queen, I know just what you mean about how it does strange and lovely things to your hear to hear your children making music.
I really like your song! It sounds very pretty!

Remember last December when you played piano, Shieldmaiden played violin, Ithilienprincess played flute, and you, me, and Faintly Macabre sang? THat was SO beautiful. Next time our paths meet we'll plunge into THE BOX and sing various oldies. ;-)
